For a few weeks now our three dogs have been going nuts when we let them into the back garden at night, and we knew we had a lodger under our decking. Last night I found our male dog tossing a small spikey ball around. So I retrieved the hedgehog, put it in a small open cardboard box and placed it, together with a bowl of water, in a dog crate and moved it to our spare room, where my wife stores all her knitting wool and garments.
This morning, I opened the crate only to find an empty box - so it was "hunt the hedgehog" time. I eventually found him curled up in a box of wool, so I transferred him to a plastic box with a clip-on lid, in which I'd drilled some air holes. Having phoned the local hedgehog rescue we were advised to give him some scrambled eggs for breakfast. When I opened the lid to feed him, the box was empty - so it was "hunt the hedgehog" time again. Good game this!
As he only weighs 300g he is too small to survive hibernation, so he'll be off to the hedgehog rescue centre in Oxford this afternoon. However, I suspect we may have some more lurking under the decking!

What a little ball of fun! Not only for the dogs... Last year I prepared a cover in the back of the garden with a lot of dry leaves and a little roof to keep out the rain, and there was one hedgehog, Mr. Milligan, that hibernated there...
If you have a vegetable garden, they are helpfull by eating the snails, so I don't mind to have them here.
You can always ask him back from the centre after the winter?
