A couple of weeks ago my Dax suddenly refused to start when I left my son's house - it turned out to be an inline fuse holder in the ignition circuit which had fallen apart internally.
Then on Sunday my throttle cable snapped on the way to a local Cobra meeting, and the car had to be recovered. I bought and fitted a new throttle cable the next day, but when I left my house for a quick test drive, it started misfiring badly.
I discovered that the distributor shaft had a lot of lateral play in it, so I had to make another trip to Real Steel to buy a new distributor. I couldn't source a direct or similar replacement for my Mallory SS Pro, so I bought a Fast (Crane Cams) HEI distributor, and decided to ditch my CDI unit and external coil. I had to make various changes due to the size of the new distributor (I'd forgotten how ridiculously large the HEIs are!), but I finally managed to get the car fired up and the timing set this afternoon.
It seems to be running fine now, and I'm actually quite relieved that these problems happened before we set off - each of them would have caused a long delay on the trip!
Anyway, after a series of stressful days, I'm quite chilled now, and really looking forward to the trip. Rob and I are setting off for Harwich on Sunday afternoon, where we'll take the night ferry to the Hook of Holland. We're dropping in on our good friend Bob Swift and his wife Ina in Bergen on Monday morning, followed by two days driving to Ribe where we'll meet Roel and Yvona de Vringer. There's a classic car meet in Ribe that evening, so they'll hopefully be surprised and pleased to see three guest Cobras there. The next day (Wednesday) we'll then all set off for Vingsted.
We're looking forward to meeting all our ECM friends again, and quite a few new faces too!
Have a safe trip everyone!
